Theme: Reflections on Romantic
Nationalism
17-22 August 2003
In this bicentennial
year of Robert Emmet’s death the Parnell Summer School takes its cue from
Emmet’s contribution to Irish history. As well as exploring the political
and cultural dimensions of Emmet’s legacy this year’s school will also
explore recent developments and debates in the study and representation
of republicanism in Ireland.
Major themes
will include: the Parnell legacy, commemorating Robert Emmet, ethnicity
and romantic nationalism, the United Irishmen and the anti-slavery movement,
theories of civic republicanism, the Irish Famine Curriculum, the writer
and society, James Clarence Mangan remembered, filming Irish history, recent
trends in the scholarship of Irish republicanism, and reflections on the
Peace Process.
