The popular identification of the Irish as a Celtic people, and the promotion of Ireland through visual and aural allusions to a Celtic heritage, misrepresent the complexities and disregard the challenges of 'being Irish'. This International Summer School, the 55th to be hosted by UCD, is a critical exploration of the idea of 'Irishness'. It focuses on three principal issues: the historical development of the idea of Irishness, its past and present constitution - and contestation - in imagery, historical narratives and cultural practices, and its value in a contemporary Ireland which is increasingly multi-ethnic and multi-cultural.
