Next Meeting

The thirty-first annual meeting of the Midwest ACIS will be held at the University of Missouri Kansas City, October 18-20, 2007.

The conference web site is not yet posted; please direct early enquiries to Dr Joan Fitzpatrick Dean at deanj@umkc.edu

Scope of the Region

The areas served by the Midwest region of ACIS  is the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Kentucky, and Missouri. Members in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba are also mailed announcements of regional meetings.

The regional meeting regularly attracts scholars and others from far outside its geographical reach, often including Ireland.

Interested non-academics are always welcome to attend ACIS meetings.

History

The Midwest held the first regional meeting in 1976—the first such meeting anywhere in the ACIS--and has met every autumn since that time.  Two of the early activists in the region, Drs. Emmett Larkin of the University of Chicago and Dr. Lawrence McCaffrey of Loyola University, Chicago, were among the original founders of the ACIS.

From the beginning, the Irish Consulate in Chicago has been a supportive and active participant in the annual meetings; traditionally, the consul general hosts an opening reception at the regional meetings and welcomes the attendees.

The Lawrence McBride Memorial Lecture

In 2005, the Midwest region established an annual named lecture to honor the late Lawrence W. McBride of Illinois State University, who had died in 2004.

A longtime and energetic member of ACIS, Larry McBride made extraordinary contributions to the Irish Studies community as both an historian and a friend. He was a past regional representative and a regional  conference host on two occasions.

Members in the region and elsewhere donated more than $5,000 to create the  Lawrence McBride Lecture fund. The fund provides $500 to support the appearance of a plenary speaker at the annual regional meeting Speakers are    selected solely by the conference host and may represent any discipline. Current plans and funding will support the Lawrence McBride Memorial lecture at least through the 2016 meeting.

The first McBride Lecture was "Reading Rory Gallagher's Blues" by Eamonn Wall; the second was "Irish by Birth, Munster by the Grace of God: Regionalism and Nationalism in the Irish Diaspora" by David Gleeson of the College of Charleston.
